I Don't Like the Term; "Self-Taught"..

We don't get very far in this world without help from others. This is doubly true when considering education. The greatest achievements of humans have all been built upon the shoulders of giants. If we aspire to have any success, we depend upon an entire community.

“Don’t ever, ever call me a self-made man”

- Arnold Schwarzenegger

I grew up poor most of my childhood. Out of my four siblings, I was the only one to attend, or graduate college. Getting me to that point was a monumental effort by my mom, numerous teachers and others.
In college I surrounded myself with instructors, mentors, and like-minded colleagues to ensure a nurturing community that set me up for success.
Now, as my career progresses, finding community to help me learn is becoming more difficult. Some will masquerade as helpers but are really there to take advantage of your position. It makes me wonder how I was able to navigate finding community when I was less experienced.

This all leads me to the epiphany: I should start providing the community I seek.
