Developing Security Software
Developing Security Software
I have worn so many infra hats at Uber, it starts to feel weird
at a certain point. It gives you a bit of intuition about most outages. But I never
expected to be leading security initiatives here.
It was obvious to me when we weren't fixing hosts at Uber - as a
service owner, you'd encounter irregularities that could be chalked up to
uncharacteristic hardware behavior. Security threats aren't nearly as obvious in a
fleet, however they can be much more damaging. We've had some close calls in the
past that really help us understand the necessity for focusing on security. It's
also just kind of wild that a giant enterprise company like this will put me in such
a critical role. It's like the company hands you the keys to production and says:
"be safe now..".
